A Historic School Gets a Fresh Look

Kansas City Girls Preparatory Academy celebrated the ribbon cutting of its newly improved campus at 5000 E. 17th Street, marking an exciting new chapter for a Kansas City building with more than a century of history.

Originally constructed in 1915 as Kensington School, the historic building was designed by Kansas City architect Charles A. Smith. An addition was completed in 1923, and the building has continued to serve Kansas City students in various capacities throughout its long history.

Today, it is home to Kansas City Girls Preparatory Academy, an all-girls public charter school dedicated to preparing young women for college, careers, and leadership.

Bringing New Life to the Campus

DA+E was proud to provide civil engineering services for the campus entrance improvements, helping transform the surrounding site into a more functional and inviting space for students

and staff.

Our civil scope included a new retaining wall, parking lot, stairs, and improvements to the upper patio, including new pavers and turf. The upper patio also serves as an outdoor classroom, providing students with an additional space to learn and gather outside the traditional classroom.

Luke McIntosh, P.E., Partner at DA+E, worked alongside Leigh + O'Kane providing structural wall design, Sur Landscape Architecture providing landscape architecture, and CB Construction serving as the general contractor.

A Building With a Story

More than 100 years after students first walked through the doors of this Kansas City school, the campus is continuing its legacy of education, now serving a new generation of young women.

We’re proud to have contributed to the site improvements that help KC Girls Prep continue that tradition while creating new opportunities for students to learn, connect, and grow.

A special thank you to Christine Kemper and the entire Board of the KC Girls Preparatory Academy Foundation for their leadership and commitment to making these campus improvements possible. We’re proud to have been part of the project!
